The term Kancheepuram derived from the name of the town of Kancheepuram near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, where it is said that more than 20,000 looms, 3-4 weavers work in each loom and nearly 4 -5 lakhs of silk sarees are produced every year. The Kancheepuram sarees are hand woven from pure mulberry silk thread. According to Hindu mythology Kancheepuram silk weavers are the descendants of Markanda, the superior weaver of Gods.
